House of the Dragon season 2: release date, trailer, confirmed cast, plot rumors, and more

house of dragons season 2

Executive producer Ryan Condal supposedly remained on set in a strictly non-writing production with no editing, no network notes, and no writing. House of the Dragon Season 2 began filming in the United Kingdom in April before moving over to Spain in May, with the season supposedly expected to continue production until around the end of the year. Dive even deeper into the world of House of the Dragon to learn more about the characters and their connections, the dragons and their riders, and an interactive map of Westeros and Essos. See the full list of House of the Dragon cast and characters here. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen.

Cast and characters

Season 1 episode 9 saw Prince Aegon II – Alicent's second born and Rhaenyra’s half-brother – become Westeros' new ruler. However, while there may be two clear sides to the fight, the allegiance of the many key figures and players – in true Martin style – are most certainly blurred. Following the events of House of the Dragon Season 1 and the death of King Viserys I Targaryen, the world of Westeros is heading for a full-on civil war for the Iron Throne, known by most as the "Dance of the Dragons." In addition to these dragons, House of the Dragon Season 2 will feature an epic battle involving naval and air forces. Dragons like Vermax, Seasmoke, Vermithor, and Silverwing will join the fight, engaging enemy warships and turning the tide of battle in favor of their allies.

House of the Dragon Season 2: How Long Does Aegon II Targaryen Stay On the Throne in the Books?

Obviously, the show will continue to track the Targaryen lineage about 300 years prior to near-extinction level on Game of Thrones. Yet whereas the first season charted the mistakes that were made (mainly by King Viserys, RIP) that led to the dominoes being lined up, this season pits the two teams — Black (Targaryen) and Green (Hightower) — against each other atop dragons. So, we’ll see the “Dance of the Dragons,” so nicknamed by the civilians of Westeros, take place with mass casualties as a result. Both trailers showcase Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) leading his forces on horseback into a battle that wages within an undisclosed forest, while dragons dart and dive overhead. There are various key battles that occur in the timeline of the Dance of the Dragons, but given Ser Criston's presence, a good guess would be the Battle of Rook's Rest.

Plot – what’s the story about?

Syrax, the dragon ridden by Queen Rhaenyra, takes center stage in the conflict as Rhaenyra's primary mount. While not the largest or most dangerous dragon, Syrax plays a significant role in the battles for King's Landing. However, Syrax meets her demise in the aftermath of the Storming of the Dragonpit.

How many episodes will House of the Dragon Season 2 be?

We shall also meet an endless stream of new character including Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin), a mysterious healer from Harrenhal, who plays a pivotal role in the book. Ser Simon Strong (Simon Russell Beale) will step up as Castellan of Harrenhal, Ser Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox) will surface as Otto Hightower’s son, and Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim) will follow up on his work in the Stepstones campaign. First, Daemon must zoom around Westeros to gather as many houses as possible for that fight. I suspect that the strategy set-up will take up much of this second season, but unlike with the book, Rhaenyra might even leave Dragonstone to participate.

A brief scene shows a group of young men drawing their swords on each other.

The main character in focus is one bearing the sigil of House Bracken (the red stallion against a gold backdrop), which resides in Stone Hedge, the location of a significant battle in the Dance of the Dragons. House Bracken notably swore allegiance to King Aegon, so the other men in the scene appear to be from House Blackwood, who swore for Queen Rhaenyra. All Condal will say to set the stage for their arrival is, "A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones have really conditioned people to expect the unexpected and expect the horrible. But, yeah, that one's pretty horrific. We'll see what people make of what's to come." "Renounce the false king and bend the knee to the queen, or your house burns." Condal speaks for many a Thrones fan when he says, "I love a Stark!" And House of the Dragon season 2 has a good one.

House of the Dragon is a prequel to the Game of Thrones series and takes place nearly 200 years before the events of the 2011 show. The series sheds light on a devastating power struggle between the Targaryens that is popularly known as the Dance of the Dragons. It appears House of the Dragon will likely run for four seasons, although the reduced episode count could see the story expand into Season 5. Catch exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews with the cast and crew breaking down the series' biggest moments and the process behind creating its memorable sets. At the same time, the Targaryen-led Blacks were making moves to gather support from Westerosi lords for Rhaenyra's claim. A sickly Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) returned from sea, and after some prodding from his wife Rhaenys declared his loyalty to Rhaenyra.

Tom's Guide will keep you posted on all updates surrounding those "House of the Dragon" season 2 episodes, including titles, runtime and any schedule changes. It's also not yet known whether, as in the first season, every new episode of the Emmy-winning fantasy series will hover around the one-hour mark or if that big season finale on August 4 will have an extended runtime like some "Game of Thrones" finales.

House of the Dragon is now at that point, where the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons can begin, and to emphasize the two sides at play, HBO has dropped not one, but two trailers for season 2, which premieres June 16. In particular, season two seems to be teasing a confrontation between Daemon and Aemond, who ride Caraxes and Vhagar, two of the largest dragons alive at the time of the series. Aemond emerged as one of the central figures of season two after claiming Vhagar and accidentally kickstarting the war between his family and Rhaenyra's. As far as the crew, co-creator Ryan Condal will be back as showrunner, though Miguel Sapochnik has exited the series.

As the dragon of Aemond Targaryen, Vhagar's presence adds considerable power to the Greens' forces. Vhagar's history includes previous riders like Queen Visenya, Prince Baelon Targaryen, and Lady Laena Velaryon, making her a formidable force in battle. The whole series of House of the Dragon is centered around powerful dragons and their riders. The show is set to introduce five new dragons in its upcoming season. Season 2 is expected to also feature the Starks, with the northern family expected to play in important role in the upcoming civil war.

House of the Dragon Season 2 is a spin-off series in the popular Game of Thrones franchise, created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal. Serving as a prequel to the 2011 show, House of The Dragon draws inspiration from Martin’s 2018 book named Fire & Blood. Following the immense success of season one, its successor is set to drop later this year, with the majority of the cast returning to occupy their roles. Following several time jumps that saw characters age out of their actors, things should slow down as Season 2 focuses more on the Dance of the Dragons, otherwise known as the Targaryen civil war. In April 2023, Variety reported that Gayle Rankin has been cast as Alys Rivers in House of the Dragon Season 2.

The first major battle takes places in the Riverlands between House Blackwood (for Rhaenyra) and House Bracken (for Aegon).

The series is based on George R.R. Martin's in-universe history tome "Fire and Blood," which chronicles the Targaryen family. "House of the Dragon" concentrates on the civil war that takes place about 200 years before the events of "Game of Thrones." Known as the "Dance of the Dragons," the devastating conflict pitted Targaryen against Targaryen. The key thing Martin has revealed in anticipation of the season 1 finale was just how long he, Condal, and HBO intended to keep the Targaryen history churning. In a blog, Martin specified that the current plan is four seasons total, with three more depicting the epic war that will shape the Westeros fans know from Game of Thrones (although it may also be an entirely different one). Martin confirmed that each season would receive 10 one-hour episodes.

And Abubakar Salim is Alyn of Hull, one of the most famous Velaryons in Westeros history. In December 2023, HBO released the first teaser trailer for season 2, which you can see below. Along with the release date, HBO also put forth not one, but two new trailers for the second season, which gives us our first look at dragons. "House of the Dragon" season 2 will premiere on Max on June 16, according to a release by Max that revealed it will debut on the service's expanded Europe offering the following day. "House of the Dragon" season 2 will be flying toward viewers in June with eight episodes and not 10. Reportedly, it's "part of a long-term plan for the show" and some major plot points are being moved to season 3.
